Permanent Hair Removal
We’re not surprised that more people are getting tired with the traditional ways of reducing excessive hairs and opt for permanent hair removal solutions in Singapore.
Shaving, waxing, threading, and the use of depilation creams are often messy and tedious. Their results are temporary. Shaving causes ingrown hairs, infected follicles and razor bumps. These are secondary problems that, again, need to be addressed. With temporary benefits, the procedures need to be done again and again, and this translates to wasted time and money.
Fortunately, new developments in technology have brought about more permanent methods of reducing excessive hair. Through a process called photothermolysis, light energy can now be used for this purpose. This is made possible using intense pulsed light (IPL) or laser light. These methods permanently reduce 80% – 90% of hairs. A small amount of hairs may grow back, but if they do so, they are lighter in color and hardly visible at all.
What are laser and IPL hair removal systems?
Intense pulsed light (IPL) and laser hair removal are both permanent hair removal methods using selective photothermolysis that involves the application of light from a source and the destruction of a target by the conversion of light to heat energy. When applied to any part of the face or body with unwanted and excessive hair growth, light from laser or IPL converts to heat and targets the melanin located at the base of hair follicles. In effect, heat destroys the hair follicles and their ability to regenerate hairs in the future.
A handheld device is used to deliver a single-wavelength of coherent light. A laser machine can be adjusted to operate at a specified wavelength and tailored to a person’s hair color and skin type.
On the other hand, IPL (intense pulsed light) emits broad-spectrum beams with wavelengths ranging from 500 to 1200 nanometer. It has various applications in the beauty and cosmetic industry.
Who are the suitable candidates for laser or IPL hair removal treatment?
Clients who have coarse dark hair on light skin are the best candidates for IPL treatment. IPL generally works better where there is contrast between the colors of the hair and the skin. People who are not suitable for IPL will be advised to use another method.
Laser hair removal treatment is suitable for all skin types, including tanned skin. There are various types of laser which can be fine-tuned to treat various combinations of skin color and hair types. Laser is often the recommended treatment for people who cannot be treated by IPL.
For best results, hair removal treatments are customized according to skin types, hair texture and body size. It is best to visit us for a consultation and we will conduct a thorough assessment of the client’s suitability to any of the treatments.
What can I expect from laser and IPL hair reduction methods?
The client can expect permanent hair reduction on the treated area. Hair re-growth is still possible several months or years after the treatment, but the hairs that grow back will be finer, lighter and less visible. Annual touch up or maintenance may be required for more serious cases.
How many sessions will be required and how long is a session?
The number of sessions required will vary from one client to another, depending on several factors, such as hair thickness and density, skin color and the size of area to be treated. On the average, 6-10 sessions are required.
Both IPL and laser treatment affect only those hairs in the anagen, or active phase. After the treatment session, those hairs in the inactive phase will move through the normal hair growth cycle and become active. This is the best time for the next session of your treatment – to treat those hairs which were dormant previously. Therefore, multiple treatment sessions are necessary for optimal outcome.
The length of a session varies from a few minutes to less than an hour, depending on the size of treatment area. For instance, hair on the chin may take barely 5 minutes, while a full back hair removal may take about 30 minutes.

How long are sessions spaced apart?
The hair growth cycle varies from person to person. Treatment intervals are usually timed from 4-6 weeks.
How do the laser and IPL hair removal procedures feel like?
There is a tingling sensation that is often associated with these treatments, but it is far from being painful. Clients often liken the sensation to a rubber band flicking on the skin, which is hardly comparable to the pain associated with electrolysis, or even waxing and tweezing.
Both the IPL and laser methods are non-invasive and non-abrasive procedures. These light-based devices come with a built-in cooling system to dissipate heat on the outer layer of the skin. In addition, a cooling gel is applied on the skin before the treatment. This adds to the client’s comfort, too.
Is there a downtime after the procedure?
There’s practically no downtime. It is quite common for customers to take a short break from work, come to our centre for their appointments, and return back to their normal home or work routines. Except for normal skin reactions, such as temporary redness, there are usually no side effects.
What post-treatment care must I keep in mind?
Use sunblock on the treated area. Do not wax or pluck hair after a treatment. You may shave or trim, but leave hair unshaven at least 3 days before the next treatment session.
Avoid tanning products, chemical peels or scrubbing at least 7 days before the next treatment.
Do men also get laser or IPL treatments?
While it’s true that we get a regular flow of women clients, men are as equally keen on keeping their excessive hairs taken care of professionally. Our female customers usually request treatment on the upper lip, underarm, legs, and the bikini and pubic area, especially Brazilian style. Male clients, on the other hand, normally have treatment for hairs on the back, neck, shoulders, chest and face.
Are these procedures expensive?
IPL and laser treatments are permanent hair reduction solutions. Using cost-benefit analysis, the overall cost can be spread over the number of years you will enjoy being smooth and hairless. This will result to a very reasonable cost per year.
Compared with the cumulative cost of the other methods which you have to spend on for many years – whether your method is electrolysis, waxing, shaving or depilation – laser and IPL hair removal treatments are still less expensive methods.
