IPL Back Hair Removal
What is IPL?
Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is one of the latest technologies in the beauty and cosmetic fields today. It is used for various aesthetic purposes including hair removal procedures.
A special flash bulb that emits broad-spectrum light is utilized in IPL hair removal. The pulses of light have wavelengths ranging from 500 to 1200 nanometers, and are effective not only for removing or reducing hair, but also for treating other skin conditions.
How does IPL work in removing back hair?
IPL back hair removal treatment is a non-invasive non-abrasive procedure of applying broad-spectrum light through the skin on the back of the body to target melanin on the base of hair follicles. Light then converts to heat energy, damages the hair follicles of actively growing hair, and inhibits their ability to grow hair again.
IPL is highly recommended for large areas, such as the back, chest and shoulders, because it covers larger areas faster than laser does. Laser machines have narrow applicators compared to IPL devices which are several times broader. The quicker procedure translates to cheaper cost and lessens any discomfort, and is often preferred over other traditional hair removal methods.
What are the benefits of the IPL that cannot be expected from other methods of removing back hair?
IPL treatment is an effective and permanent hair reduction solution for unwanted hair on the back. Unlike the traditional methods, such as shaving and waxing, the effects from IPL are long lasting. With IPL, the usual complications that go with these temporary methods, like ingrown hair and razor burns, are also solved along with unwanted hair.
Electrolysis is an invasive and painful procedure, involving the application of electronic probe to apply heat to each hair follicle. IPL, on the other hand, is non-invasive and generally pain-free.
Will multiple treatments be required? Why?
Multiple treatments will indeed be necessary, especially for the back. About 6-10 treatments, spaced at 4-6 weeks apart, will be needed to address back hair. Excessively hairy persons may need more treatments.
IPL only affects actively growing hair, or hair in the anagen phase, and not all hairs are active at any one time. After the first treatment, there will already be visible results and shedding will be observed within the first two weeks following the treatment. Previously inactive hairs will then enter the active phase at about the same time the second treatment will be administered. Some more hairs will be affected. The procedure is repeated until such time that all hairs shall have been reached by IPL at their active growth phase, and the number of hairs will be markedly reduced. Should there be hair regrowth, their texture will be finer.
Will this procedure work for women, too?
While excessive back is usually a problem among men, women are not exempted from unsightly fuzz on the back. The procedure is basically the same.
Who are the suitable candidates for IPL back hair removal?
IPL treatment targets the pigment called melanin, which occurs not only in dark hair, but also in dark skin. The best candidates for the treatment, therefore, have skin color ranging from light to medium, and with hair that’s coarse and dark. In fact, best results are expected for individuals with coarser and darker hair. For those who are not suitable for IPL treatment, we will make a thorough evaluation and recommend other methods of hair removal.
Is it painful? What is the procedure like?
IPL treatment is not painful at all. Often, clients compare the sensation to the flicking of an elastic band on the skin.
All treatments start with a consultation. We will assess your skin color and hair type to see if IPL is a suitable option for the reduction of your unwanted hair. During the visit, you are encouraged to ask about all your concerns and other information you want to be clarified of.
A cooling gel will be applied on your back or other areas to be treated. A hand-held IPL device will then be used to deliver pulses of light to the skin. A cooling system is integrated in the IPL device to protect your outer skin. As mentioned, you may feel a tingling sensation that’s not necessarily painful.
The treatment time will take about 30 minutes for the back, but this is wholly dependent on the size of the body back area to be treated.
How long is the recovery or downtime after a treatment session?
There is practically no downtime, as most clients go back to their normal activities after the treatment.
What pre- and post-treatment care must I know beforehand?
- Don’t wax or pluck your hair at least 6 weeks before a treatment.
- You may shave the treated area 3 days prior to the next treatment.
- Protect the treated area from the sun by using a sunblock with an SPF of at least 30. Avoid tanning products.
- Allow natural shedding of hair after a treatment.
Is IPL also effective as hair removal system for other body areas?
Certainly! IPL hair removal system has high efficacy for permanent reduction of unwanted hairs on the face, neck, arms, underarms, hands, breast, chest, legs, and bikini line. Even sensitive facial areas, such as the upper lip and chin, can be treated with IPL as long as the client has the ideal combination of light skin and dark hair color.
