IPL Facial Hair Removal

What is IPL hair removal system?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) hair removal system is a non-invasive and non-abrasive method of permanently removing unwanted hair. IPL emits a broad spectrum of light that damages hair from its roots; thus, disabling growth or re-growth of hair on the treated area.

The treatment works under the principle of photothermolysis, using light with wavelengths ranging from 500-1200nm. The beam emitted by IPL converts to heat energy which then targets the melanin or pigment located abundantly in the hair follicles. This destroys the hair follicles and inhibits their ability to grow hair.

How does the procedure work?

What is the IPL treatment for facial hair removal like?

A handheld device is used to administer intense pulses of light on the facial area to be treated. Clients feel a tingling sensation that is not necessarily uncomfortable or painful. They compare the sensation to a rubber band snapping on the skin.

How long does a treatment session usually take?

An IPL treatment for facial hair removal may take from 15 minutes to half an hour, depending on the size of the areas to be treated. Hair on the upper lip, for instance, will take around 10 minutes to treat, while full beard in male clients will take 20 minutes or more.

Will all hairs be affected during the first treatment?

The hairs on your skin are not all actively growing (or in the anagen phase) at the same time. An IPL treatment affects only those hair follicles in the anagen phase at that time, sparing those that are in other phases of the hair growth cycle. As some more hairs enter the anagen phase, a second or third IPL treatment will significantly affect more hairs, and so on and so forth until the full course of the treatment is completed and all hairs shall have been affected.

How many sessions will there be? What is the interval between sessions?

Hairs on the face generally require more treatment sessions – from 8 to 12 to ensure permanent hair reduction. Sessions are usually 4 to 6 weeks apart. A top-up treatment every year may also be necessary to ensure long-term effects.

Am I a suitable candidate for IPL light-based hair removal?

If you are fair-skinned and have dark coarse hair, then you are an ideal candidate for IPL facial hair removal treatment.

What are the benefits of IPL over other hair removal systems?

The IPL method removes hair permanently and effectively, so this is obviously better than shaving, waxing and a variety of other traditional options for removing hair. It also provides a long-lasting solution to ingrown hairs, bumps and rashes.

Electrolysis is an invasive technology that uses electricity to cause damage to each hair follicle. It is very time consuming and rather painful. IPL, on the other hand, covers large areas faster than laser and other light-based methods do, and because of this, there is less pain and discomfort, and the cost is cheaper.

This cosmetic procedure is pain-free, safe and effective in getting rid of embarrassing and irritating hairs.

Are there special preparations that I need to do before the procedure?

Do not tan, wax, pluck or thread the area to be treated before your IPL appointment.

What are precautions and tips for taking care of my face after the treatment?

After a treatment session, avoid sun exposure. If it cannot be avoided, apply sun block. Moisturize skin to prevent drying and chafing. Avoid tanning, waxing, plucking, threading and chemical peels prior to your next therapy session.

Is waxing and shaving allowed before and after the treatment?

You must avoid waxing. Shaving is allowed, but not within the 3-day period before a treatment session. You must allow a short shaft of hair to grow. This helps to absorb the light pulsed during the treatment.

Are the effects of IPL hair removal permanent?

With photothermolysis, the hair follicles in the site treated are permanently damaged; hence, they are permanently unable to produce new hairs. However, new hair growth may be observed in some clients experiencing hormonal imbalances, such as hormonal changes brought about by pregnancy and menopause, but these are exceptional cases.

What other sites can IPL treat?

IPL hair removal is used for making other body parts silky and beautiful. It is applicable where there is unwanted hair – on the legs, arms, underarms, bikini area. It’s not only women who dream of smooth and hairless skin, because we get as many requests from men for IPL treatment on the chest, back and legs. Brazilian-style IPL hair removal is quite popular, too.

Is the procedure painful?

Except for the tingling sensation that is often associated with IPL treatment, there is hardly any pain in the procedure. The cooling system protects the outer layer of the skin and keeps the whole procedure painless. Some clients experience redness immediately after the treatment, but this is generally mild and temporary.
